California Wildfires
A catastrophic series of fast-moving wildfires began burning in Southern California on January 7th. The ZDR3 team was in contact with our facilities in the region starting on the first day of the fires, and we stayed in communication with them until the event was finished.
Although no ZDR3 Network facilities needed to evacuate due to the fires, we were directly coordinating with 5 facilities at varying degrees of impact. 14 ZDR3 Network facilities in 4 states pledged to provide support if evacuations became necessary. If called upon, many more ZDR3 Network members were willing to provide support to the region.
Two ZDR3 Network members in California assisted a local wildlife rehabilitation facility by assisting with staffing and supply shortages.

Texas Severe Weather
A severe storm with straight-line winds struck Texas in May, resulting in the damage of several habitats at a ZDR3 Network facility. Thankfully, all staff and animals were safe. Unfortunately, the lemur enclosure was destroyed by a fallen tree, and multiple big cat habitats were damaged by flying debris. ZDR3 Needs Assessors arrived to support the facility and completed targeted fence repairs to confirm containment before the cats were released from their hardened night quarters. Because of damage to the facility’s well, a local ZDR3 Network facility was prepared to truck in water as needed for the duration of repairs. Fortunately, repairs were able to be quickly completed, allowing more rapid restoration to normal operations.
A nearby ZDR3 Network facility stepped up to house the four displaced ringtail lemurs for almost two weeks. With the peace of mind that their animals were receiving excellent care, the impacted facility had the time and space to rebuild the enclosure. They were even able to provide new, exciting enrichment for the lemurs to come home and explore.
