Recovery
ZDR3 assists zoological facilities not only during active disaster response but also in the recovery phase, when facilities transition from immediate crisis management back toward stable operations. The recovery process can last weeks to months—even years for some facilities—and is critical to ensuring sustained animal welfare, staff well‑being, and long‑term facility resilience.
On‑Scene Recovery Support
When resource allocation permits, ZDR3 may deploy recovery units to assist with post‑disaster stabilization and essential repairs. Because response readiness always remains the organization’s top priority, recovery deployments are carefully evaluated based on anticipated seasonal needs and available personnel.
Timing and Approach: Recovery support is typically initiated one to two weeks after the incident, once the facility has shifted from emergency mode and identified its specific long‑term recovery needs.
Focus Areas: Only projects directly related to animal care operations or facility functions essential to welfare and safety are supported—such as repairs to enclosures, water systems, or utility access.
Staff Integration: Recovery services are carried out by a ZDR3 On‑Scene Liaison or Crew Lead, who coordinates priorities with facility leadership to avoid overlap with local contractors or agencies.
ZDR3 has a growing network capable of providing this type of assistance and has completed on‑site recovery efforts in previous events.
Remote Recovery Support
Recovery does not always require physical deployment. ZDR3 also provides remote assistance to help institutions document recovery progress, process after‑action information, and maintain communication with peer and support networks.
Remote recovery activities can include:
Continuing communication with CISM or Psychological First Aid (PFA) teams engaged during response
Helping leadership document facility impacts, time‑stamped photos, and records for insurance or planning use
Organizing material for after‑action reviews or future improvement plans
Supporting ongoing information flow between the facility, professional networks, and partners such as accrediting bodies
Recovery Funds and Resource Support
ZDR3 provides critical recovery funding to zoological facilities impacted by disasters by mobilizing resources through our extensive network and strategically directing support where it is needed most. Many facilities face significant challenges in the aftermath of a disaster—some may be unable to publicize their story, lack connections for broad fundraising, or have little capacity for online campaigns. ZDR3 actively identifies these gaps and prioritizes facilities experiencing severe resource deprivation or acute unmet needs.
By coordinating donations, grants, and in-kind support, ZDR3 ensures those in the most disadvantaged or overlooked situations receive targeted assistance for repairs, animal care, and operational recovery, helping them rebuild quickly even when traditional funding channels are out of reach.
Sustaining Long‑Term Recovery
ZDR3 recognizes that true recovery extends beyond physical repairs. Personnel often face emotional exhaustion and logistical challenges even after initial stabilization. ZDR3 maintains communication with facility leadership to ensure continued access to support and planning resources as needed.
